The main objective of the whole project was to build up a permanent network of gardens and parks on a regional and transnational level and to market them together in order to increase the interest in gardens and parks among decision makers, visitors, tourists and inhabitants. The goals and objectives of the local projects differ from each other. However, the overall objective for all partners is to develop the gardens and parks, to make them more attractive and to market them together. About 150 gardens and parks are chosen because they symbolise a cultural heritage and have a high quality of experience. At the same time there is attached importance to dissimilarity among the represented gardens. You can find gardens with for example a particular historical value in which there are castles and manor houses; gardens with an artistic distinctive mark in which there are attached exhibitions in the form of for instance exotic animals. The spectrum covers a wide field and with European Gardens there should be room for culture, nature and pleasure. As inspiration to the many unique experiences in European Gardens you find under www.european-gardens.com examples from Denmark, Germany, Finland and Sweden and links to many European Gardens. Following the baltic parks and garden route you will find and attractive offer of cultural events and outdoor activities, which where developed within the project. New marketing concepts were the basis for parks and gardens to become more professional and to create and income which is necessary to maintain these green cultural heritages. Parks and gardens from other european countries are welcome to join the “European Gardens”. For this purpose the partnership is going to found an international association of parks and garden. Achievements of the project so far:Gardens and parks have been more attractive and accessible for visitors because of the project. The tourism organisations have become more aware of the assets represented in the gardens and parks. The project has brought new knowledge to the participants because of the content of the international meetings, study visits and workshops. New ideas and marketing knowledge where gathered in all participating region. The cornerstone for a transnational baltic parks and garden route was laid within the project. The project partners will continue developing the tourism products based on garden and parks as a part of the content of holiday and garden tour packages. Gardens and parks contributes to the general tourism profile of the regions. The value of the Press, PR and marketing activities are huge. People became more aware of the importance of cultivated green areas. The developed marketing concepts allows the gardens to produce and income to re-invest it into the maintenance and development of the garden. In some participating regions the municipalities marketed their parks and gardens togehter for the first time, instead of competitive marketing activities. On the regional level a common marketing strategy and common concepts have been developed in order to wake up the interest for gardens and parks. The gardens and parks contribute a lot to the general tourism profile of the region. A larger trans-sectoral understanding between gardening planners and touristic experts was implemented. The interest among tourism people for gardens and parks has grown rapidly. Development plans have been made for most of the parks and gardens and in some cases the plans have been completely or partly implemented. Cooperations with other gardens and parks networks were strengthen and new joint activities came up: A complete new network of gardens and parks has been established in specified regions Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Cooperation has been launches with other national and international networks, e.g. with the “Royal Horticultural Society”.
